Fantomas was born in Yrenelania on the 8th day of Kiara's Showers in the year 618. His father was an important religious leader, and encouraged Fantomas to become a cleric in his footsteps. His parents were killed during a routine raid by the knights of Vallien when he was just 9, and he was left to raise his younger brother Osker alone.

Being something of a social outcast he soon developed an enjoyment of study and learning that was not shared by his peers. He also started seeing orcish culture as backward, vicious and barbaric, and renounced the worship of Ytrewtsu to which he was born. Because of this dissatisfaction with the things offered to him, he started to search for alternative social activities. He tried to meet people from outside Yrenelania, associating with the humans that sometimes came to trade, but they had nothing new to offer him, being interested only in riches and individual power. Over time he even spoke to some of the elves from nearby Deltharian, and although they distrusted him, he found them a welcome change from the orcs he lived around.

Soon however, he and his brother began to make plans to leave Yrenelania. They snuck out in the middle of the afternoon to avoid scrutiny, and travelled to Naerlan to begin a life without the constraints that orcish culture placed upon them.
